Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis  is also called Trich. It is a curable sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by the parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomonas is typically pear-shaped and has a length of about 10 µm. Other body parts, such as the hands, mouth, or anus, are uncommonly affected by the parasite.Trichomoniasis is a parasitic disease, which is contagious, when people have multiple sexual partners. Sometimes the symptoms are absent, but people have disease if they contact with infected people.

If trich is left untreated, it may have raises chance of contracting HIV if come into contact with the virus. HIV can cause AIDS if left untreated. HIV-positive women and other AFAB individuals are more prone to transmitting both illnesses to their partners. Because of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise women and people who identify as AFAB who are HIV positive to get tested for trich at least once a year. People who have trich during their pregnancy are more likely to give birth early. Moreover, their offspring are more likely to be born underweight.The most prevalent treatable STD is trichomonia. Oral medication in the form of pills can be administered by a medical professional to treat the infection. Pregnant women can safely receive this medication as well.

Symptoms

  • Itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals
  • Discomfort when peeing
  • A clear, white, yellowish, or greenish vaginal discharge
  • Itching or irritation inside the penis
  • Burning after peeing or ejaculating
  • Discharge from the penis

  • Multiple sexual partners
  • A history of other STIs
  • previous trich transmissions

Diagnosis

Cytology department

The vaginal discharge is obtained from the patient.The specimen is sent to the laboratory for further identification. Make the smear on the slide and also apply a specific gram stain on the slide. After the staining process is completed, then we go for the microscopy examination.The microscopy examination aids the information about the characterization of the microorganism,which helps in diagnosis and treatment of the infectious diseases.
